Social media is a wonderful thing. Not a day goes by that I don’t get a pitch from some eager startup trying to squeeze a little more juice out of the social Web, talking about how they can do it better — more connected, more open, more social, and on and on.

Sadly, all that sharing has its price. We’re familiar with the stories about employers digging through an applicant’s MySpace and Facebook pages looking for the kind of character reference that you can’t find on a resume. But what if the job you’re in line for is the director of White House speechwriting?

Then it would probably be impolitic for you to be seen taking liberties with a life-size cardboard cutout of Hillary Clinton, the president-elect’s chief rival throughout the campaign whom he has now tapped as Secretary of State.

Such is the plight of Jon Favreau.

Favreau, 27, served as Obama’s chief speechwriter throughout the campaign. So you can attribute to him much of the credit for the soaring oratory, supplying the words that Obama delivered so successfully in his rock-star campaign rallies.

But remember — he’s 27, and a great many people in Washington have done a great many worse things at a much older age. (For those of you who haven’t seen it yet, here’s Favreau getting cozy with cardboard Clinton at a party with one of his buddies.)

So the infraction is a twenty-something having a few beers at a party with some of his pals and indulging in a little sophomoric humor that was intended to stay behind closed doors.

In the pre-Facebook, pre-MySpace, pre-YouTube, pre-cell-phone-camera era, that might have been a reasonable expectation. But no longer.

The plain truth today is that regardless of whether you partake in the great social media experiment, odds are you’re surrounded by people who do. And that means that anonymity, as we used to understand it, is gone. Some things aren’t meant to be broadcast, but that’s yesterday’s thinking. Today, the paparazzi aren’t just for the famous. No matter who you are, the best advice might be to live your life with the constant assumption that you’re being filmed, fun be damned.

A recent study from the Pew Internet Project looked ahead to 2020, surveying Internet experts about what the future will bring and asking, among other things, whether the 360 view of a life lived in the digital era would blunt our indignation when things like the Favreau pictures surface. Essentially, are we heading toward what Jeff Jarvis called the “era of mutually assured humiliation”? Everyone’s got secrets, and everyone knows they could be outed at any moment by some digital mishap, so think twice before you start throwing stones.

The survey respondents were split on that question.

Judging by the reaction to the Favreau incident, we’re not there yet. When the “scandal” hit, a torrent of cries came down calling for Obama to cut the young man loose. Shrill, indignant, and completely off base. And yet, perhaps an unavoidable symptom of life in the age of user-generated media.

My guess is it will be a gradual acclimation. As these flare-ups become more commonplace, their shock value will diminish. It seems inevitable. But in the meantime, it’s easy to imagine that many other prominents will get raked through the news cycle for more or less innocuous behavior because cameras are everywhere and the Web has made global distribution a trivial thing.

Remember George Allen in 2006? His bid for the Senate wasn’t so much torpedoed by doing silly things on Facebook, but by repeating what many took to be a racial epithet at a campaign rally, which quickly became a viral hit on YouTube.

Favreau’s antics, much more benign, don’t seem to have sapped his career. He’s still on the team, the Obama machine has said he apologized, and a Clinton staffer told the Post that “Senator Clinton is pleased to learn of Jon’s obvious interest in the State Department, and is currently reviewing his application.”

At least someone still has a sense of humor.

A new classic lesson in marketing

Caught this seemingly distressed sentence … again … in the middle of a sales presentation: just Google it. ; I have heard this phrase in TV and radio and in conversations with friends … everywhere. And Webster? s has added a new verb; google? in the dictionary!

Why is Google the name that comes to employ when we think something research?
The classical laws of marketing will say to us;; the s;; first on the market … the first rule in mind;;. He shows us the rule brands such as coke, the Xerox, the Kleenex, Lite (miller), etc.

But we;; Fedex?? a right;; packing now? Many other shipping companies were on the market long before the Fedex. We;; Google it;; no;; Yahoo this;; or …; MSN is; or …; Lycos this; etc. Thus the rule doesn?? the first part – the market seems to hold water in today; s with a fast pace, high-tech market.

Consider this amendment to the rule:

;; the first to make a major brand to influence and enhance the image of a great product or service will eventually become the first in the minds and on the market … sometimes. ;

OK, that; s … and better note that I left some room wiggle.

How do you hold that the initial momentum brands into force?

After being sold for decades; coke;; even used as a generic term. If you require a; Lite?? and taking a light eyes, the bartender give evil eye. And when we want to do … we look;; Google it. ;

Why are some brands lasting impressions while others weaken?
That;; s because some companies continue to strengthen the language;; trademarks;; with the clever marketing and advertising. And this;; s because these companies produce very good products that are continuously improved and expanded upon. For companies of all sizes, here is a list means giving particular – effective:

;; examinations;; website make your region and forcing the powerful to maximize conversions from the help of customers to find what they want, to pique their interest and possession of calls to action that match the patterns of purchase. The internal and external research has shown that many areas in industries fail to achieve their core objectives.

;; campaigns;; e-mail with a 56 / 1 ROI, is the best way to keep ahead of the prospects of passing as a normal sales cycle.

;; on-line advertising and promotional DEI;;, organic SEO, ads, and social campaigns virus from … all work extremely well for most products and services.

The printed material;; Impactful a sounding board and electronic media;; the language of brands and intrigue your prospective basis from all your marketing challenges.

;; Blogs and online public relations;; effectively using blogs and press releases to enhance;; the online value you;; on your industry (which Google loves).

;; The trade fair marketing;; This varies from industry to industry, but these demonstrations are a great way to get in front of a large proportion of the framework your target market in the short term. Today;; s displays that are more interactive and informative than those in the past.

What can businesses of all sizes to learn from this?

Create the great products or services, and make sure the market that you know and impressed by your brand. All businesses must continue to effectively promote their brands and their main assets to customers based on the objectives and their perspective. This must be done by a reliable company or a delegation through the use of innovative and forcing instruments and strategies.

The e-commerce sites govern the World Wide Web with their presence, the number of such sites has seen a sharp increase in recent years. It is an excellent way for the operational expansion when seeking international exposure for your business. The overhead costs of a website and this is much less than a physical store. A single site can connect from anywhere in the world, but in the event of physical store if you want to tempt customers in another country, at a shop should be building there.

The different tools and features can be added in an e-commerce site to make it attractive and user-friendly. The experience reinforced the market leading to greater customer satisfaction.

The e-commerce sites are virtual on-line shop aschomenos with different types of products or services. A virtual cart, a basket or a waggon markets is part of any online store. Whenever a customer selects an item and the purchase included in the wain markets until kymatoges customer site and checks out for your payment.

You may or may not be aware that the BBC recently redesigned its news web site. I’m going to comment on the merits of the redesign (well, okay, I like it) — there’s plenty of that going on elsewhere:

Refreshing changes (check out the comments)

News and Sports Website Refresh: Your Comments

The BBC News redesign disaster

BBC News redesign: Can someone powerful please yell at them?

60% of Editors Blog comments hate the BBC News redesign

As a web designer, what’s interesting to me are the reactions of users to a redesign that was no doubt well-researched and thought out by a team of talented web professionals (take a read through The Glass Wall (PDF 6.7MB) to learn more about their design process).

If you read through user comments, they appear to be largely negative. Therefore, the redesign was a disaster, right?

Well, let’s not be too hasty.

Firstly, let’s not forget that the online feedback makes for a pretty biased sample. It’s a fact that people who feel strongly about something — especially if it’s negative — are most likely to make their opinions heard.

What stood out to me in reading through the negative comments and feedback was the overwhelming desire to turn back the clock and return the site to its old design. Basically forget the whole redesign thing ever happened.

Funnily enough, this appears to be the very same reaction that many users had when the BBC News site went through its last redesign, back in 2003.

Comment on the 2008 redesign:

In terms of style, if the old look was the Times, it now looks like the Beano. I thought the old style had more gravitas.

Comment on the 2003 redesign:

Looking at it from the most basic level, nothing stands out and i don’t know where to look first.

So, the 2003 design that many users want to return to is the same redesign that initially drew similar criticism to that which is being leveled at the new 2008 design.

It seems to me that perhaps people are reacting more to the fact that the design has changed rather than whether it is inherently better or worse.

E-commerce site redesigns have a similar problem in that sales may initially drop because visitors are unfamiliar with the new design.

So, what’s a designer to do? Well, firstly realize that no matter how great your design, some (even many) people are going to hate it initially — and will do so vocally.

But also recognize that this reaction may be due largely to lack of familiarity with the new design more than anything.

Therefore, it’s important to gather user feedback once users have had time to get used to the new design — say, after one and three months. This will likely be a truer test of whether the redesign has succeeded than relying on initial reactions.

Earlier when the Web Design was a new concept, just the possession of one has any firm to distinguish from the crowd and made ahead of market competition. But now the trend has changed completely, having a website but not all should be well designed and should reflect the ability and the information your business;; s needed. If your site is not up to the mark and well-diatirimenos will create a negative impression on visitors.

In the event that happens to ignore the basic and important elements of a website, visitors areas will also turn away from your website in first-first minute only! The target customers will immediately Defer to another site where Web design is not appropriate. Assume that the site seems a good result and also high on the criteria of search engines. But if it lacks proper SEO (search engine optimization) at the site would prove a loss instead of a lucrative tool.

There are different criteria based on which you can decide if the project Web is used or not be profitable for online business.

1) The page Oikoon arrange that the information you want to tell the visitors areas you are clear and the bid must give them. The website should give a clean and organized look with the appropriate shipping. The home page should not be chaotic and should contain all relevant information. All internal connections must be clear and precise, to put temptation for visitors to return again.

2) the satisfaction of Web site content must be absolutely free from any spelling and grammar error. Put all relevant content in the form of articles, information, blog, case studies, etc. We very well to illustrate your services, products and benefits. The use of targeted keywords in / phrases in website content for search engine optimization.

3) measuring the performance of website pages, images and video website (if any) to load in less time. Web design codes must be clear and clean. If you insert any optional search on your website, make sure that it is fast and functional. The site you must be available and compatible with all possible search engines Web customers can use objectives.

4) shipping routes linking all navigation must be functional and clearly collateral. Only in brackets connections must be sufficiently attractive and expressive. The menu waterways could be installed to be able to make their sites your visitors to access the entire site.

Google’s latest piece of free software is a browser specifically designed to run the new generation of web-based applications. Find out why Chrome is different to other browsers and how it could improve your experience on the web – even if you never use it.

Google’s beta release of its open source web browser Chrome on 2 September – less than three months after Mozilla’s record breaking launch of Firefox 3 – underlines just how central Google is becoming to our online lives.

Some commentators expressed surprise that Google, which already offers everything from word processing to instant messaging in addition to its ubiquitous search engine, would launch a browser at all. But the only real surprise is that the California-based company didn’t do it sooner.

The announcement of Chrome via a 38 page online comic book isn’t the only interesting aspect of Google’s latest application. Indeed, as soon as you launch the browser, users are presented with a home page that shows clickable thumbnail versions of the nine sites you most visit (this is actually similar to the Firefox add-on Fast Dial).

There are also links to recent bookmarks and recently closed tabs and, of course, a Google search box. It’s the most useful default home page ever conceived.

Google has renamed the address bar the Omnibox (which has got to better than Firefox’s self-proclaimed AwesomeBar) to reflect its added functionality. The bar incorporates search and a browser history, eliminating the need for a separate search box.

Chrome, which Google built with the open source software WebKit, also features some tricks that go beyond the purely aesthetic. Each tab is run as a separate process so, if one of them crashes, it won’t freeze the entire application and force users to restart it.

This means that external software is isolated in a sandbox so that it cannot access personal documents. It also prevents keystroke copying, which can be used to surreptitiously obtain passwords.

The clever use of tabs also enables stealth browsing. If a user opens an Incognito tab, the browser doesn’t record a history or anything entered into text fields. Any new cookies are stored in a temporary folder that is deleted when that Incognito tab is closed.

Unsurprisingly, the Incognito function has quickly been dubbed the porn mode although its uses do extend beyond simply being able to view salacious content anonymously. Using an Incognito tab for online banking or other transactions in which you have to input your credit card details, for instance, offers another layer of protection online.

And crucially, a new JavaScript engine, called V8, is designed to speed up the sort of interactive web applications that we now take for granted – from video to blogging software – while also enabling a new generation of web apps that couldn’t exist on other browsers.

All of which is housed in the sort of minimal and unobtrusive design with which Google is synonymous: the top of the window features just two rows of toolbars, which incorporate the Omnibox, tabs and navigation buttons.

A page’s loading status and links’ URLs are discreetly displayed at the bottom of the window as necessary, in contrast to the omnipresent status bar of most browsers. Chrome also dispenses with a separate window for downloads, which are instead displayed at the bottom of the relevant tab.

A ‘create application shortcut’ option enables users to create desktop shortcuts to web applications that then run in a window with no browser controls. It means web apps look and behave like desktop applications, a further step towards Google taking more of our interaction with PCs online.

There was an early hiccup when it became apparent that the End User License Agreement included a clause that demanded users surrender the copyright to any content submitted through the browser.

Google subsequently edited the offending clause – which forms part of its standard terms and conditions – to state that users “retain copyright and any other rights”. The changes were made retroactively, so they cover content submitted while the original clause was in place.

Google is currently working on versions of Chrome for Mac and Linux operating systems, although there’s no indication when these will be available. For Mac and Linux users keen to see what they’re missing out on, a third-party port of the Windows version is available.

There is, as yet, no support for the sort of add-ons that help make Firefox so appealing. But it’s worth remembering that this is just version 0.2 of Chrome. Even Gmail, which was launched in 2004, is still officially in beta. By the time it’s released, Chrome 1.0 may be barely recognisable compared to today’s version.

Whether Chrome will eventually compete with Internet Explorer (which, as of August 2008, has a market share of 72.15%) and Firefox (19.73%) is a moot point. Even at this early stage, it’s a fast, innovative browser.

Many of its features will, no doubt, be embraced by other browsers. So even if you never download Chrome, there’s a good chance that you’ll still benefit from it.

As of the Dance/Update that began in mid-May 2003, Google has changed the way that it does its Main and Fresh crawls, and its process of incorporating new pages into the index. Until the new processes are better understood, the information below should be ignored.

Google’s Fresh Crawl explained

Google does two types of crawl:- the main crawl and the fresh crawl. The main crawl is done once a month; the fresh crawl is done more-or-less daily, but only some pages are crawled. Google is still experimenting with which sites and pages to crawl and how deep to crawl. Neither type of crawl puts any new pages into Google’s main index. That only happens at the next update – at the conclusion of the next Google Dance. Fresh crawls can be distinguished from main crawls by the IP addresses used by Googlebot. Fresh crawl: 64.68.82…; Main crawl: 216.239.46…

The fresh crawl recrawls pages that are already in the index, picking up new pages along the way. Fresh-crawled new pages are evaluated in some way and inserted into the search results straight away, which means that new pages can be found by surfers almost immediately, even though they are not yet in Google’s main index. A new page can be added to a site today and traffic could start arriving on it within hours.

Also, updated pages that are already in Google’s main index, are re-evaluated in some way and inserted into the search results in places that reflect the changes. E.g. the day after the link to this site’s SEO Copywriting page was placed on the index page, the index page showed up at #3 for the search term “seo copywriting”. The index page was well established in Google’s main index, but the SEO copywriting part of it was new, and was given the “fresh” treatment. Very soon after that, the SEO copywriting page itself was ‘fresh’ ranked at #1.

This is good news for surfers and webmasters, although some websites can suffer for a while due to fresh-crawled new pages pushing them down the rankings.

In practise, many new fresh-crawled pages enjoy a flury of traffic while they are not in the main index. When they have been included in the main index, they take their place in the rankings according to their evaluated merit, and the traffic tends to be reduced unless the page actually merits its ‘fresh’ ranking, of course.

At the time of writing, the fresh crawl is still new, but my theory of the experience of a new page is this:-

Sometime during a month, the new page is found by Google and fresh-crawled. It is evaluated in some way and placed in a ‘fresh’ index. From there it is inserted into the rankings, according to its ‘fresh’ evaluation.

The page is involved in the next end-of-month dance but, because it hasn’t yet been main-crawled, it isn’t included in the actual update and isn’t placed in the main index. It continues to be a ‘fresh’ page.

Then the main crawl gets underway. If the page still exists, it is crawled and will be included in the following update, when it will enter the main index. During this period, it may keep the ‘fresh’ ranking that it achieved provided that other new pages don’t come along to push it down. It is only after the page enters the main index that it’s true ranking is seen.

Because of the page’s revised evaluation when entering the main index, traffic from it is likely to drop. That’s assuming that the page didn’t really merit its ‘fresh’ ranking.

It should be noted that Google is continually updating the rankings and ‘fresh’ rankings are very volatile in that they come, go and change during a page’s ‘fresh’ period.

As I said, the fresh crawl is still quite new and not yet fully understood. The experience of a new page from fresh crawl to main index is what I believe I have observed, but my conclusions could easily be wrong. The reason I believe that new pages don’t enter the main index until the dance and update after they have been main-crawled, even though they have usually been involved in one dance, is because Google still shows no links to them until after the update following their first main crawl. This is my theory of a new page’s experience but, like any theory, it may need to be revised in the light of new observations.

Addendum

As of the New Year 2003 update, Google is applying Toolbar PR0 (zero PageRank) values to some new pages. PR0 normally indicates that a page has been penalized, but these PR0s are not penalties. From my observations, it appears that the values apply to pages that have been fresh-crawled and have gone through an update following the fresh-crawl. Such pages don’t get into the main index until after they have been main-crawled and gone through the update after that. It appears that, between the two updates, Google applies PR0 to the pages.

The reason for it may be to do with how Google inserts ‘fresh’ pages into the rankings or it may be for some other reason entirely. Also, it may be that different PR values are applied to different pages, but it is brand new and, as yet, I have seen only PR0 values applied.

In the past there were a lot of controversy surrounding the development of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines for WCAG version 2.0 (which we also were not entirely innocent), but nearly all participants in the discussion had only one goal: a better standard for the benefit of users and Web developers. And that is since yesterday, the 11th December 2008, achieved – if that’s no reason to celebrate too!

Many controversies revolved around the complexity of the documents and ensure the guidelines are complex, where they are from front to rear reading (what we have done several times). But, as Shadi Abou-Zahra of the WAI said: “” Dear too much than too little documentation “.” The guidelines are not entirely without reason as extensive as expected, and there are two simple reasons: ruggedness and testability. The WCAG 2.0 is technology-neutral and robust, so that all current and especially future Web technologies, we still do not know, should be covered.

And they are 100% testable! (unlike its predecessor) In addition to the machine testable criteria, there are a number of non-machine-testable criteria, but all are formulated so that two different human testers independently to the same result would have come. This makes it easier to work with the guidelines but immensely.

And they are 100% feasible! An important precondition for the adoption of the guidelines was that the feasibility for each point could be demonstrated in detail. Without such proof no directive (incidentally were also some remarkable example implementations from the German-speaking countries here).

If you do not want to read entire documents – that we fully understand. At least the basic principles and guidelines but should any professional Web developers know. These are really brief – so brief and so obvious that we can print here in its entirety:
1st Perceivable – Information and user interface components must be presentable to users in ways they can perceive.
* 1.1 Provide text alternatives for any non-text content so that it can be changed into other forms people need, such as large print, Braille, speech, symbols or simpler language.
* 1.2 Provide alternative for time-based media.
* 1.3 Create content that can be presented in different ways (for example simple layout) without losing information or structure.

* 1.4 Make it easier for users to see and hear content including separating foreground from background.

2nd Operable – User interface components and navigation must be operable.

* 2.1 Make all functionality available from a keyboard.
* 2.2 Provide users enough time to read and use content.
* 2.3 Do not design content in a way that is known to cause seizure.
* 2.4 Provide ways to help users navigate, find content, and determine where they are.

3rd Understandable – information and the operation of user interface must be understandable.

* 3.1 Make text content readable and understandable.
* 3.2 Make Web pages appear and operate in ways Predictable.
* 3.3 Help users avoid and correct mistakes.

4th Robust – Content must be robust enough that it can be interpreted reliably by a wide variety of user agents, including assistive technologies.

* 4.1 Maximize compatibility with current and future user agents, including assistive technologies.

The elegant building on the guidelines is that the wealth of information is always bigger and the statements are always accurate, the farther you are in the depth vorarbeitet. Developers must therefore usually not everything from front to back read, but can eg using the customizable Quick Reference accurately select the techniques that are of interest to them.
The next steps?

Now the lawmakers asked from this steep submission as soon as there is a retread BITV in version 2.0 deduce. It would be from the perspective of those affected (and are not just people with disabilities, but also the Web developers who must implement it all, the manufacturer of test tools, editing systems and other authoring tools, the software industry, etc. pp.) desirable if the new regulation will be 100% compatible with the internationally applicable standard would be.

So Google Chrome is finally out of beta. From a detailed point of view this means that my version of Chrome (stable) jumped from 0.4.154.31 all the way to non-beta 1.0.154.36 version. That’s quite a jump.

But on the dev-channel version of Chrome, I’m still at version 0.4.154.33 (the one I wrote about earlier this week with the Hotmail fix). That’s kind of strange isn’t it?

Wouldn’t you expect that the dev-channel would be first to be out of Beta? (Just as a reminder, Google offers two versions of Chrome, dev-channel and stable). The details of why Google hasn’t officially moved its dev-channel users to version 1.x are detailed by Google Chrome Program Manager Matt Larson.

“Note to Dev channel users: The Dev channel release will stay at 0.4.154.33,” Larson wrote. “The current stable release is the same as the current Dev channel release without the Hotmail fix (which hasn’t been tested enough to release to all users). An update is coming next week.”

So what does that mean? It means that Google Chrome 1.x non-beta doesn’t work with Hotmail as it should.

It also means that Google has done a little magic with its numbering system for Chrome in my opinion. Unless I’m totally wrong Google Chrome dev 0.4.154.33 actually has more fixes in it than Google Chrome stable 1.0.154.36. It also means that Google has taken a product out of Beta without first making sure it had a Linux version available.

Don’t get me wrong Google Chrome is one awesome browser. But just don’t forget that even though Google has declared it out of beta and now has a 1.x release there are still a lot of bugs to fix.

Google has steadily made improvements in Chrome’s features since its debut, addressing audio and video handling, hardware conflicts, render speed and JavaScript performance. The company also added a bookmark manager for power users who maintain up to thousands of links.

Chrome eventually will get features from the Google Toolbar that’s available for Internet Explorer and Firefox, the company said. But the effort won’t entail a direct port of the toolbar, which offers utilities like a pop-up blocker, translation and Web-based bookmarks — instead, Chrome will just incorporate some of its features.
